  • Duration: Jan 2024 – April 2024 – 60 + Hours

Discovery Process

Students in the school of Emerging Media and Technology don’t interact with other students frequently. The faculty and staff at Kent State also needed to find a purpose for the lounge space and touch screens in Franklin Hall, where the school is located.

How Was the Problem Addressed?

In an interdisciplinary group, we tackled the challenge by creating a website that displays 4 different games: Tic-Tac-Toe, Word Scramble, Memory Card, and Hangman. Members of my group interviewed individuals to help us gather new information on our expected outcomes.

Prototyping Process

When fixing bugs on the games and implementing other themes for the main menu, we started prototyping with what we created. An example would be that we didn’t have a navigation to swap between games, only one that sent you back to the main menu. Listed below are some changes we made that are now live on the site.

  • Changed Images on Memory Card to match our theme
  • Fixed Navigation for easy access to the different games and menu
  • Implemented new images for the homepage game icons
  • Have people from the college interact with the screen to create a map of user flow

Mind Map / User Flow

Presented is the mind map for this space. I show how the user tends to interact with the touch screen in the lounge space, and the plethora of options to change between games, even while playing a different one.

Takeaways and Next Steps

Throughout my time working on this project with my group, I gained a lot of new insight on how to interact with JavaScript, along with boosting my knowledge in HTML and CSS. Working in a team environment on this project really helped everything move at a steady pace, along with helping me get through challenges when faced with adversity in the code.

In the future, I hope to see the interactive game website be used by many throughout Franklin Hall, and I hope to hear that more students are getting the chance to interact with each other in a collaborative way outside of the classroom.
